Anamalai Tiger Reserve was founded in 1976 as the Anamalai Wildlife Sanctuary and was later renamed Indira Gandhi Wildlife Sanctuary and National Park. It is located near Pollachi at an elevation of 1,400 meters at the Top Slip and covers an area of 958 square kilometers. The Palghat Gap, a 30-kilometer-wide gap in the Western Ghats mountain range between the Nilgiri Hills to the north and the Anamalai Hills to the south, serves as a vital communication route between Kerala and Tamil Nadu. The Anamalais Reserve was created from the Tamil Nadu section of the Anamalais. The Reserve is administered by the Tamil Nadu Forest Department.
